Despite the rapid rise of digital technology and the shift in reading habits towards online platforms, over 300,000 Chinese-language books are still published annually, with 7 billion printed copies circulating in the market. Rather than being replaced, physical books and bookstores are undergoing a dynamic transformation—reimagined through innovative design and storytelling within space, bookstores are once again becoming vital cultural landmarks in the urban landscape.
In this talk, renowned designer Freeman Lau, architectural and cultural critic Charles Lai, and special guest Hong Ko will guide us in exploring the evolving role of print books and physical spaces in contemporary society. Join us as we delve into the innovative spirit behind Chinese-language book publishing, the transformation of bookstores, and the ways cities are reimagining reading spaces for the future.
